Gautam Buddha,the Awakened One

Twenty-five centuries ago, around 543 B.C. King Suddhodana,or the chief of Shakya clan, ruled a land near the Himalaya Mountains, presently known as Lumbini, Nepal.

The Buddhist tradition regards Lumbini, present-day Nepal, as the birth place of Gautam Buddha and has been the same from centuries until now. Because now-a-days some of the Indian officials have started to claim that India was the birth place of Gautam Buddha. It is so because Gautam Buddha grew up in Kapilvastu but still today the exact location of the ancient Kapilvastu remains unknown. It may have been either Piprahwa, Uttar Pardesh as claimed by the Indian officials or Tilaurakot, present day Nepal as per believed from centuries until now. Both places belonged to the Sakya territory and are just 15 miles apart. Note that even Indian officials are not able to prove it so far.

              Birth Of The Awakened, Buddha

One full moon night during a midsummer, King Suhhodana's  wife Queen Maya ( A Koliyan princess: Koli people are historically an ethnic Indian group native to Rajeshthan, Himanchal Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharastra uttar pradesh and Haryana states) retired to her quarters to rest, and she fell asleep and dreamed a vivid dream. Four angels came down and carried her high into white mountain peaks and clothed her in flowers. A magnificent white bull elephant with six tusks, one bearing a white lotus in its trunk approached Maya and circled her three times. Then the elephant struck her on the right side with its trunk and vanished into her.

When Maya awoke, she told her husband about the dream. The King had no answers to what her dream actually meant. So he at once ordered Brahmans to be present in his palace. 64 Brahmans came and interpreted that Queen Maya would give birth to a son and he was indeed a great soul who was going to take birth as a human.

10 months later when the time for the birth came near, Queen Maya, as per the Shakya tradition, wished to travel from Kapilavastu, the King’s capital, to her childhood home, Devadaha, to give birth. With the King’s permission and blessings she left Kapilavasthu on a palanquin.

On the way to Devadaha, they reached a garden which was full of blossoming trees. The Queen got so enchanted that she asked her courtiers to stop, and she left the palanquin. As she reached up to touch the blossoms, her son was born under the same sal tree. It is so said that  the Queen and her son were showered with perfumed blossoms, and two streams of sparkling water poured from the sky to bathe them. And the infant stood, and took seven steps.

Then Queen Mayadevi and her son returned to Kapilavasthu. the king was so happy to see his son and Queen back. He then announced a birth celebration. During the birth celebrations, Siddhartha placed his feet in a hermit seer's hair the seer then examined the birthmarks. after his observation he announced that the child would either be a great conqurer or a great saint.

Five days later, Suddhodana held a naming ceremony of the new born and invited scholars and fortune tellers. On their examination of the birthmarks of the new born they all came under the same conclusion as the hermit  announced. They all predicted that the baby would either be a great king if he remains attached to worldly riches and desire if not he would beame a great sage.

Unfortunately Queen Mayadevi died a few days later, and the infant prince was nursed and raised by his mother's younger sister, Maha Pajapati Gotami, also married to King Suddhodana. Maha Pajapati Gotami also became the very first buddhist nun later and she is the one to compel Buddha to open a gate way for women as nun in buddhism.

However when Siddhartha was just an infant his father, the king remained worried about the future of his kingdom and his son.Because it took them twenty years of waiting, King Suddhodana and Mayadevi had no children until twenty years of their marriage. Buddha came with a light of hope for a father as well as a curse to King's Kingdom.

The king then decided to raise his son in the lap of luxury, away from sufferings, pain, diseases and so on.....

Guru Nanak, The Enlightened teacher

Nanak naam jahaz hai, charhe so utre paar,

(Nanak is the name of the ship which takes you to your salvation)

Jo sharda kar sevde, gur paar utaran haar.

(The ones who preach Waheguru’s(the Supreme Being or the creator of all) name in their hearts, He takes those to their salvation)

These lines are taken from Ardas, a Sikh prayer that is done before performing or after undertaking any significant task. There is a mention of Waheguru in these lines. Waheguru is a term used in Sikhism to refer to God, the Supreme Being or the creator of all

                       Guru Nanak

Guru Nanak is the founder and the first of the ten Sikh Guru. He was born in 15 April, 1469 in Talwandi, a village in Sheikhupura district, 65 km west of Lahore( Present day Nankana sahib, Punjab, Pakistan)His father Mehta Kalu and mother Mata Tripta belonged to the merchant caste. His father was the local accountant for crop revenue in the village of Talwandi.

From a young age he started displaying his brilliance. He became interested in spirituality and divine subjects when he was just five. And started to attend school when he was seven years old. As a boy , Guru Nanak learnt Arabic, Persian besides other regional languages. When he attained the age of 11, his father arranged for him to participate in the sacred thread ceremony, a Hindu ritual symbolizing man’s connection with God(purity). But the boy rebelled and refused to participate in this ritual as he felt that it was a meaningless one. When Guru Nanak was 12 years old his father gave him twenty rupees and asked him to do a business, just to teach him business. instead Guru Nanak bought food from the money he got and distributed all among the saints, needy and poor. when his father asked him about the business, he replied that he invested all the money in 'True Business'. At present the place where he distributed food to the poor is a Gurudwara( the place where Sikhs come together for congregational worship) named as Sacha Sauda.

He had one sister, Bebe Nanki, who was five years older than he was. In 1475 she got married and moved to Sultanpur. Nanak was attached to his sister so much that he followed her to Sultanpur to live with her and her husband. At the age of around 16, Nanak started working under Daulat Khan Lodhi, employer of Nanaki's husband. it is there that he came into contact with Mardana, a muslim minstrel. Guru Nanak got married in 1487 and had two sons, one in 1491 and the second in 1496.

He performed well in his job as he was a very hardworking and sincere employee. He also proved to be a very kind and generous person. In spite of being a married man and father now, he was not distracted from his quest for spiritual knowledge. He became friends with  Mardana with whom he used to pray and meditate.

One morning he went to bathe in the Kali Bein or Black River with Mardana. He walked into the river and disappeared beneath the water. There was no sign of him and everyone believed that he had drowned in the river.Three days later he miraculously appeared out of the river. But he remained  silent.

The next day, he said:"There is neither Hindu nor Muslim, but only man. So whose path shall I follow? I shall follow God's path. God is neither Hindu nor Muslim and the path which I follow is God's."  Nanak further said that he had been taken to God's court. There, he was offered a cup filled with Amrit(nectar) and was given the command,"This is the cup of the adoration of God's name. Drink it. I am with you. I bless you and raise you up. Whoever remembers you will enjoy my favour. Go, rejoice of my name and teach others to do so. I have bestowed the gift of my name upon you. Let this be your calling."He was spiritually reawakened by this incident and was completely enlightened. People then started calling him “Guru Nanak”.

Mahavira, The Enlightend One

Jainism is an ancient religion from India that teaches mankind that the way to liberation and bliss is to live a life of harmlessness and renunciation. The central principles of this religion is non-violence and love towards all living beings."ParasparopagrahoJivanam"  which means that the function of souls is to help one another and this is the motto of Jainism. The three main principles of Jainism are ahimsa (non-violence), aparigraha  meaning non-possessiveness and anekantavada (non-absolutism). Followers of Jainism take five main vows: 'ahimsa' meaning non-violence, 'satya'  meaning speaking only truth and never lying,'asteya' meaning not stealing,  'brahmacharya'  meaning chastity, and 'aparigraha' which means non-attachment. Jain monks and nuns observe these vows absolutely whereas householders  observe them within their practical limitations.

Lord Mahavira, the enlightened one, also the founder of Jainism. However, Jainism existed even before Lord Mahavira was born. According to , Heinrich Zimmer;Jainism can be traced back as far as third or fourth millennium BC, due to the discovery of a series of great late Stone Age cities in the Indus Valley". According to Jain philosophy, Mahavira is supposed to be the twenty-fourth Tirthankara. A Tirthankara is an enlightened soul who is born as a human being and attains perfection through intense meditation. He is regarded as god and his philosophy becomes the holy book.

Lord Mahavira was born in the royal family of Bihar in 599 B.C at Kundagrama, which was a suburb of the flourishing town of Vaisali, about twenty-seven miles north of Patna. . His father's name was King Siddhartha and mother's name was Queen Trishala (the sister of the Vaisali ruler, whose name has been given in the Jaina texts as Cetaka).According to the Jain belief, Mahavira’s parents were worshippers of Parsva and followers of the Sramanas

He was known by the name of Vardhamana because of the increased prosperity in the kingdom at the time of his birth. Vardhamana means the one who grows. He was called Mahavira, Maha means the great  Vira means hero ( the great hero) because of the acts of bravery he performed during his childhood. Mahavira was also given the title 'Jina' which means the victor or conqueror of inner enemies such as attachment, pride and greed.

In his young age or as a young boy he was very bright and courageous. He once saved his friends from a poisonous snake. He One day, while playing with his friends in his father's garden , saw an elephant, which was mad with fury because 'Musth' ( it is a periodic condition in male elephants, characterized by highly aggressive behavior and accompanied by a large rise in reproductive hormones. Testosterone levels in an elephant during musth can be as much as 60 times greater than in the same elephant at other times) Mahavira and his friends saw it rushing towards them. His companions( all boys), got shocked and frightened on the sight of the impending danger, they deserted Mahavira and ran away. Without losing a moment, Mahavira made up his mind to face the danger and went towards the elephant. He caught hold of his trunk with his strong hands and mounted on its back at once. Such stories of bravery are abundant.

Born in the royal family he had all the luxuries of life at his command, yet he led a very simple life. He left all his worldly possessions after his parents expired and became a monk. He gave up all pleasures and left his family for the purpose of attaining enlightenment. Easy to type or speak but the reality is completely different and very difficult. For twelve years, which is a very very long long time, he deeply meditated in order to overcome his desires and cravings. He succeeded in going without food for days, avoided clothes. He suffered all the pain that the human body does like cold, heat, rain, fever, hunger, thirst, inscests bites, thorns on his feet, stones on the way. Yet he never got angry nor harmed another living creature even if it was an insect. A Story too says that, once while meditating, he was bitten by a deadly snake. Still he did not develop any kind of hatred for the snake and kept meditating. After twelve years, he attained divine knowledge and self-realization. His perception about everything was crystal clear and he paved the way for spiritual pursuit for future monks.

Once he realized the knowledge, he began travelling and preaching. He taught people the way of living life and attaining mokshya, the ultimate goal of all humans. Mokshya means freedom, freedom from misery, pain and cycle of death and rebirth. He walked bare footed and refrained from eating too often........

Who is Muhammed?

A journey from an ordinary man to a Prophet

Muhammad was born in Mecca ( Makkah), Arabia, on Monday,2 August A.D. 570. His mother, 'Aminah', was the daughter of 'Wahb Ibn Abdu Manaf 'of the Zahrah family. His father, 'Abdullah', was the son of 'Abdul Muttalib'. His genealogy has been traced to the noble house of 'Ishmael'. Muhammad's father died before his birth.

Muhammad's father died before his birth and before he was even six years old his mother too died, and the orphaned Muhammad was put under the charge of his grandfather 'Abdul Muttalib' who took the most possible tender care of him. But the old chief too died two years later. After the death of his grandfather, authority in Mecca was divided among the ten senators who constituted the governing body of the Arabian Commonwealth. The Kaaba was surrounded by 360 idols, and every Arab house had its god. These idols were brought from all over the world. Thus people from all over the world visited Mecca, with lots of offerings for idols. But along the new governing body there was no safety of individual rights and property. Though family relations had some degree of protection , yet strangers were frequently were robbed, not only their goods, but even their wives and daughters.

Muhammad's grandfather on his deathbed he handed over his son 'Abu Talib' the charge of the little orphan. In his early years, Muhammad had to watch the flocks of his uncle, who had already lost the greater part of his wealth.

When Muhammad was twelve years old, he accompanied his uncle 'Abu Talib' on a mercantile journey to Syria, and they proceeded as far as Busra.

From youth to manhood he led an almost solitary life. During those days tribes had fierce fights in which many were killed and injured. The sudden outbursts of such bloody quarrels among the tribes naturally caused the feelings of pity and sorrow in the heart of the sensitive youth like Muhammed.

When Muhammad was twenty five years old, he traveled once more to Syria. But this time ,as a worker of a noble and rich women named "Khadijah' . She was a widow and got highly impressed with his faithfullness, honesty, and purity in heart that she happily offered herself to him as his wife. Khadijah was much the senior in age to Muhammed, but in spite of that the most tender devotion and love existed on both sides.

Until Muhammed reached thirty years of age, he was almost a stranger to the outside world.

When Muhammad reached thirty-five years, he settled a grave dispute, which threatened to plunge the whole of Arabia into a fierce, bloody wars,
by his wise judgment . It so happened that in rebuilding the Sacred House of the Kaaba in A.D. 605, the question arose as to who should have the honor of raising the black stone (the most sacred of all the idols), into its proper place. Each tribe claimed that honor. The senior citizen advised the people that the first man to enter from a certain gate would decide. The proposal was agreed upon, and the first man who entered the gate was Muhammad. His advice satisfied all the contending parties. He ordered the stone to be placed on a piece of cloth and each tribe to share the honor of lifting it up by taking hold of a part of the cloth. The stone was thus deposited in its place, and the rebuilding of the House was completed without further interruption.

Muhammed was not only wise but was helpful to the needy and the helpless. He also helped his uncle 'Abu Talib' by undertaking the bringing up and education of his son 'Ali'. A year later he adopted 'Akil', another son of his uncle.

'Khadijah' bore Muhammad three sons and four daughters. All of their sons died in childhood, but in loving 'Ali' he found much consolation.

About this time, Muhammad set a good example of kindness, which created a salutary effect upon his people. His wife 'Khadijah' gave him a present of young slave named 'Zaid Ibn Haritha', who had been brought as a captive to Mecca and sold to 'Khadijah'. When 'Haritha' heard that Muhammad possessed the slave 'Zaid', he came to Mecca and offered a large sum for his ransom. Whereupon Muhammad said: "Let Zaid come here, and if he chooses to go with you, take him without ransom; but if it be his choice to stay with me, why should I not keep him?' Zaid, being brought into Muhammad's presence, declared that he would stay with his master, who treated him as if he was his only son. Muhammad no sooner heard this than he took Zaid by the hand and led him to the black stone of Kaaba, where he publicly adopted him as his son Hence Zaid was called the son of Muhammad.

Muhammad in his fortieth year was worried and thoughtful for humans of that age.
His two visits to Syria had opened to him a scene of unutterable moral and social desolation. Arabian countries were facing extreme barbarism, addiction, superstitions, frequent and unsudden war, women had lost their respect, people were looted and killed, rivalry between different religious practice and belief and so on.

For years after his marriage, Muhammad had been accustomed to secluding himself in a cave in Mount Hira, a few miles from Mecca. To this cave he used to go for prayer and meditatiion. He was very concerned with his people's ignorance of the divine master, injustice, widespread social unrest, selfishness in humanity, women discriminated, rape, murder, loot, bloody war and violence among tribes and people of different faith and belief, abuse of tribal authorities prevalent in Pre-islamic arabia and so on. He was very hurt from within thus he spent hours, most of the time whole night he used to forget himself in prayers, deep thoughts and profound communion with the unseen devine master of the whole universe, 'Allaha'. It was during one of those night, when no human sympathy was near, an angel came to him to tell him that he was the Messenger of Allah sent to reclaim a fallen people to the knowledge and service of their Lord.

Muhammad would seclude himself in the cave of Mount Hira and worship three days and nights. He would, whenever he wished, return to his family at Mecca and then go back again, taking with him the necessities of life. Thus he continued to return to 'Khadijah' from time to time until one day the revelation came down to him and the Angel Gabriel appeared to him and said:

"Read!" But as Muhammad was illiterate, having never received any instruction in reading or writing, he said to the angel: "I am not a reader." The angel took a hold of him and squeezed him as much as he could bear, and then said again: "Read!" Then Prophet said: "I am not a reader." The Angel again seized the Prophet and squeezed him and said: "Read! In the Name of Your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), has created a man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, Who has taught (the writing) by the pen, has taught man that which he knew not." (Ch 96:1-4 Quran) Then the Prophet repeated the words with a trembling heart.

Perplexed by this new experience,he returned to 'Khadijah' from Mount Hira and said: "Wrap me up! Wrap me up!" She wrapped him in a garment until his fear was dispelled. He told 'Khadijah' , "I fear that something may happen to me". She replied: "Allah forbid! He will surely not let such a thing happen, for you speak the truth, you are faithful in trust, you bear the afflictions of the people, you spend in good works what you gain in trade, you are hospitable and you assist your fellow men.   Then she arose and along with her husband went to her cousin 'Waraqa Ibn Naufal', who was old and blind and who knew the Scriptures of the Jews and Christians. Waraqah said: "O my nephew! What did you see?" When Muhammad told him what had happened to him. 'Waraqah' replied: "This is 'Namus' (meaning Gabriel or the holy spirit) that Allah sent to Moses. I wish I were younger. I wish I could live up to the time when your people would turn you out." Muhammad asked: "Will they drive me out?" Waraqah answered in the affirmative and said: "Anyone who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should be alive until that day, then I would support you strongly."And he kissed him on the forehead. A few days later Waraqah died.

Birth of Jesus

Christianity is an Abrahamic religion. People who believe in Christianity are called Christian. It is a monotheistic religion, meaning it has only one God. It is the largest religion in the world and is based on the life and teachings of Jesus Of Nazareth.

                         Birth Of Jesus

An Angel Visits Mary

The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and said, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.

Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: ”The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”-- which means, “God with us.”
When Joseph awoke, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus

Shepherds visit Jesus

That night, some shepherds were in the fields near Bethlehem, keeping watch over their flocks of sheep. An angel appeared to them and gave them the good news that a Savior, the Messiah, had been born. The angel told the shepherds they could find Jesus lying in a manger. Suddenly a whole group of angels appeared saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!"

The shepherds hurried into Bethlehem and found Jesus in the manger, just as the angel had told them. After they had seen Jesus, they spread the news, and everyone who heard was in awe.

Wise man visit Jesus

some time later, wise men, or magi, from eastern countries saw a star in the sky that signaled the birth of a new king. They came to Judea, the region around Jerusalem and Bethlehem, to worship Jesus, the new king.

A man named Herod was the king of Judea. He called the wise men to a meeting and told them to find the new king so he could go and worship him, too.

The wise men continued on to Bethlehem and followed the star until it was directly above the house where Jesus was. They found Mary and Jesus in the house and knelt down to worship Him. They brought Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, some of the finest things in the ancient world. Frankincense was burned to make a sweet smell, and myrrh was an expensive perfume.

After visiting Jesus, the wise men had a dream that warned them not to go back to King Herod, so they took a different route home.

Journey To Egypt

King Herod lied when he told the wise men he wanted to worship Jesus. He was afraid this new "king" would replace him as king of Judea. He did not understand that Jesus would grow up to be king of God's spiritual kingdom, not king of Judea.

What Herod really wanted was to find Jesus and kill Him! Herod was furious when he realized the wise men had not come back to tell him where to find Jesus. He sent his soldiers to Bethlehem to kill all the children under two years old, thinking Jesus would certainly be one of the ones killed.

But God had told Joseph in a dream to flee to Egypt. Joseph took Mary and Jesus to live in Egypt where they would be safe from Herod. Joseph, Mary and Jesus stayed in Egypt until Herod had died, and then they returned to Nazareth.

Chatt Festival

It is often seen that hinduism is always assumed to be the religion of fools and satanic religion by other religions in the world. Well! in this scientific age even hindus have started to believe the same as others do. They are often found forcing others not to believe in god and goddess but in science. And such people are rapidely increasing in number.

All I have to say is, no religion in this world is religion of fools or satanic, but it is us who is not able to understand and often make the final dicission watching the ignorants of the certain religion following it.

Here is a short discription of a Festival celebrated by hindus.

                        CHATT PARVA

Chhath is an ancient Hindu Vedic festival dedicated to the Sun and Goddess Chhathi Maiya.

The Goddess Chhathi Maiya is known as Usha in the Vedas. She is believed to be the beloved younger wife of Sun God. Usha(The first light of day) and Pratyusha(the last sun-ray of day) are wives of Sun and Aditi is his mother.

Usha in the Rig Veda has more symbolic meaning. Symbolically Usha is the dawn of divine consciousness in the individual aspirant. It is said - Usha and Pratyusha, wives of Sun are the main source of Sun. Both Usha and Pratyusha are worshiped along with Sun in chhath parva. Usha is worshipped on the last day and Pratyusha is worshipped in the evening by offering water or milk to the rising and setting sun respectively. This is the only parva which signifies rising sun as well as setting sun both.

According to hindus, sun is regarded as god and the Chhath Puja is performed in order to thank sun god for sustaining life on earth and to request the granting of certain wishes, as well as for the well-being, success and progress of their family members, friends, elders and so on..

The rituals of the festival are observed over a period of four days. In this auspicious day the devotee wake up early in the morning, take a holy bath in a river nearby and keep fasting and abstaining from drinking water for whole day, they even keep themselves standing in the water for a long time. They offer prasad(food as offering) and argh (water as offering) to the rising sun. It is celebrated in almost every region of  Nepal and India.

Chhath Puja 2016 Dates

  • Friday, 4th of November 2016 is the day of bath and can eat food.
  • Saturday, 5th of November 2016 is the day of fasting which ends after sunset (36 hours long fast).
  • Sunday, 6th of November 2016 is the day of Sandhya( dusk) Argh.
  • Monday, 7th of November 2016 is the day of Suryodaya(dawn) Argh and the Paran( breaking of the fast).

History                                                      The Rigveda contains hymns worshiping the Sun god and describes similar rituals followed even today. As it is well known that Rigveda is the oldest veda of all vedas this ritual may even predate the ancient vedas texts.

It is considered that Lord Rama and Mata Sita had kept fast and offer puja to the Lord Sun during their coronation after returning to the Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. From that time, chhath puja became the significant and traditional festival in the Hindu religion and started celebrating every year at the same date in Sita mata's homeland Janakpur.

The ritual is also mentioned in the greatest epic Mahabratha. In mahabratha it is so said that Draupadi and the pandavas performed chatt puja as per advised by a sage Dhaumya. it is believed that the sun god in return helped pandavas to regain their lost kingdom.

Here are some pics of my mom and maiju captured in a chatt parva previous year. The more detailed information and recent pics of chatt parva will be uploaded in my upcoming blogs.

Until then take care, and thank you

Pilgrim's journey to Vaishnu devi

             My Mom's Journey to Vaishnudevi

In hindu religion it is often described that every hindu must visit certain pilgrimages in order to attain mental peace and gain positive energy. Well this time my mom, she went to Vaishnudevi with my grandmother and other pilgrims. Here is a Short description of Vaishnudevi mata Temple followed by the Photos they snaped in their journey. Hope you will enjoy

 Mata Vaishnu Devi

Vaishnu Devi, also known as Mata Rani, Trikuta and Vaishnavi, is a manifestation of the Hindu Mother Goddess Mahalakshmi. The words "maa", "mata" and "aama" are commonly used in Nepal and India for "mother", and thus are often used in connection with Vaishnu Devi or any other goddess.

Journey To Vaishnu Devi Temple

It is said that, if you want to achieve the four objectives of human life laid down by the Hindus spiritual tradition i.e Dharma (Righteousness), Artha (Material Pursuits), Kaama (Contentment) and Mokshya (Enlightenment), you must visit  Pilgrimage like Vaishnu Devi at least once in your lifetime.

About Vaishnu Devi Temple

Vaishnu Devi Temple is a holy pilgrimage destination for the Hindus, located in the folds of three-peaked mountain Trikuta, 12 km away from Katra in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India.

Vaishnu Devi History

It is very difficult, like any other old shrines, to trace back the history of Vaishnu Devi; however geological studies indicate that the holy shrine of Vaishnu Devi is almost a million years old. Though the Vedic literature doesn't refer to any goddess, however one can find the mention of Trikuta hills in Rigveda - the oldest of the four Vedas.
There are different versions of the origin of Vaishnu Devi available, but according to the most popular version, the shrine of Vaishnu Devi was discovered about 700 years back by Pandit Shridhar. According to the popular belief, Mata once helped in organizing a Bhandaara(religious offerings made to gods, devotees, saints) at Shridhar's place. But, she had to leave the place to escape Bhairav Nath. As Mata left the place, Shridhar stopped distributing food or Bhandara in grief and started praying for Mata Vaishnu Devi.
Mata came in his dreams and asked him to search for her at the cave in the Trikuta Mountain. This led to the discovery of the holy cave. Shridhar found three head on the top of  a rock, which are currently known as the Holy Pindies.

                                         Thank You
